Beijing Travel Guide to Summer Palace 颐和园

Guide to Summer Palace 颐和园

Before I arrived to Beijing, I have researched countless websites regarding Beijing's top tourist attractions and I have concluded that it is really a must to visit this two places!

And really before starting to tour in China, it is definitely essential to know where and how you are heading to the attractions sites be it by buses or subway stations. Some of the stations can be quite a hassle to travel and its way extremely important to know which buses to take you there! Over the weekends, I have encountered many lurking locals illegally trying to sell tickets to unsuspecting tourists or offer you a ride to the place where you can easily get there!

That being said, I will introduce to you guys a super super awesome mobile application, 高德地图
This application will show you the directions to walk to the subway station, how many bus stops required to take and to plan your time in travelling! It looks something like this,

And to add on, you get timely voice notification if you accidentally walked to the wrong direction or miss your bus stop station. Just follow the directions and you will be fine! I rely on the app SO MUCH that I experienced some panic attacks when my mobile 4G isn't working at all.

Luckily for me, I am staying at 朝阳北京,which is really near this subway station line 6 call 金台路 and if you see the subway station, I have to change to 平安里 to subway station line 4 and to 颐和园 station and 圆明园 station. They are pretty close to each other, around one or two stop difference. To travel and change between the subway lines is really convenient!

Guide to Summer Palace

photos taken from google.

The Summer Palace was initially built in 1750 by Emperor Qianglong. The imperial family preferred beautiful garden and airy pavilions than forbidden palace. Empress Cixi took up permanent residence for a long time and the place was centred around Kunming lake and the entire lake is artificial. The excavated soil was used to build the longevity hill where it house many courtyards, temples and bridges around. Trust me when I say, you have to prepare two bottle of mineral water (at least) to quench your thirst while you climb up and down the steep stairs and down to the lake.

When your reach the subway station just follow the direction sign and exit. You will see a KFC shop and continue to walk straight towards the bus stop station on your right and you'll reach the entrance in no time. The admission ticket is around 60RMB that includes entrance to everything, but it's entirely impossible to finish everything. However, if you purchase inside the park is definitely much more expensive so it's still worth it to buy 大人联票 (combined-entrance ticket) to all 4 halls.

Anyway don't bother buying the maps inside the park, it doesn't work (at least for me!) Even the locals had a hard time navigating their way through the halls. So just relax and stroll. You'll get to the lake eventually. There is a boat service that brings you another area which will be damn useful because you won't want to go back to where you started right?

After climbing the treacherous hill and all there is an exit towards the another side. For me I rather pay 20rmb to sit the boat and exit then to walk all the way up.... cause it is really tiring.

Selfie stick can come really handy when you are travelling solo alone and you need to take pictures!

At one of the halls.

Paid 20RMB to rent costume to take photographs/ 30RMB to get your costume and photos printed in 4R. Quite interesting experience!

Toilet selfie!

Had to walk down this steep slope before reaching Kunming lake. Was feeling so tired but just have to endure through for the beautiful view.

Really love the details of the paintings. Mostly were fading away but still in good condition.
During winter in Beijing, all the lake will be frozen with a layer of ice.

The really steep staircase up to the Buddha hall. Felt like I was falling down a few times.

Sausage!

One of the boat treasure. Can't really recall what this is. Mainly walking and trying my luck to follow tours to listen to local guide's explanation of the entire park :')
So lazy me finally decides to take a boat! Really really tired after walking the whole day. Toured diagonally across kunming lake and actually to the exit!

Bought a ice pop from a young boy for only 1RMB but it tasted so sweet that I threw the it halfway:( The subway station isn't really far!

Just navigate your way through and tell the boat person say you would like to go 西园 station. Walk all the way out of the garden, you will see a few locals trying to ask you for taxi rides to subway and don't agree to it! There is a bus stop station opposite the garden and around 3 stops you will reach the subway station. It is pretty obvious to spot all the subway stations, usually the keyword is just 站 and just use the mobile app 高德地图 to navigate through! :)
